Great news! Microsoft has announced exciting developments for the future of on-premises Exchange with the introduction of Exchange Server SE set to launch early in Q3 of 2025. This new subscription edition (SE) will arrive just as support for Exchange Server 2019 concludes on October 14, 2025. Administrators should note the tight timeline for transition as there will be no extension of support for the older versions. The forthcoming Exchange Server SE will maintain code continuity with Exchange Server 2019 CU15 ensuring a smooth upgrade process.

Additionally, CU15 will introduce support for Windows Server 2025, expanding the installation options for Exchange 2019 which can currently be installed on Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022. This support will be available once Windows Server 2025 reaches General Availability (GA) later this year.

The licensing for Exchange Server SE will align with the model used for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, necessitating active Software Assurance or subscription licenses.

This update comes as a breath of fresh air after a prolonged period without updates from Microsoft and promises a robust future-ready platform for users.

Microsoft Exchange Server SE will be available for download from the Microsoft 365 admin center in the early part of Q3 of 2025.
