The highly anticipated Exchange Server 2019 CU15 release has faced unexpected delays beyond its initial January 2025 target.
Why the Delay?
The postponement stems from two critical factors. First, CU15 incorporates new features as it’s designed to be code-equivalent to the upcoming Exchange Subscription Edition (SE) RTM. Second, Microsoft’s Technology Adoption Program (TAP) testing revealed issues requiring attention, necessitating a new build and reset of the testing process.
Windows Server 2025 Compatibility
Both Exchange 2019 CU14 and the upcoming CU15 now support Windows Server 2025. This enhancement enables organizations to:
- Deploy Exchange on new hardware with Windows Server 2025
- Prepare for seamless in-place upgrades to Exchange SE
- Maintain compatibility with Active Directory servers running Windows Server 2025
Recommendations
Organizations should continue their migration to Exchange 2019 without waiting for Exchange SE RTM. The timeline remains unchanged for key milestones:
- Exchange SE RTM remains scheduled for early H2 2025
- Previously announced lifecycle dates stay in effect
- The recommended path continues to be: migrate to Exchange 2019, install latest updates, then upgrade to Exchange SE when available
Looking Ahead
While the delay may cause some frustration, we appreciate Microsoft’s commitment to deliver a robust final cumulative update. In the meantime continue working on preparing your organizations for Exchange SE, by migrating to Exchange 2019.
