Microsoft has announced significant changes to the Exchange Server roadmap, introducing Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) as the next major release. This update brings important implications for organizations currently running Exchange Server 2013 and 2016.

Key Points

  • Exchange Server SE will be available for download in early Q3 2025.
  • Exchange 2013 and 2016 will no longer be supported when Exchange SE is released.
  • Organizations must upgrade to Exchange 2019 before moving to Exchange SE.

Upgrade Path

  1. Exchange 2013 users: Perform a legacy upgrade to Exchange 2019 CU14 or later.
  2. Exchange 2016 users: Upgrade to CU23, then perform a legacy upgrade to Exchange 2019 CU14 or later.
  3. Once on Exchange 2019, an in-place upgrade to Exchange SE will be possible when it becomes available.

Important Dates

  • H2 CY 2024: Release of Exchange 2019 CU15 (final CU for Exchange 2019)
  • Early H2 CY 2025: Release of Exchange SE RTM
  • October 14, 2025: End of support for Exchange 2016 and 2019

Licensing Changes

Exchange SE will require subscription licenses or licenses with active Software Assurance for both server and user licenses.

Organizations should start planning their migration strategy now to ensure a smooth transition to Exchange SE. It’s crucial to move away from Exchange 2013 and 2016 as soon as possible to maintain support and security. For more detailed information, please refer to the following resources:
